Abstract
This training manual on statistical methods for nuclear material management is a companion publication to a reference book entitled Statistical Methods for Nuclear Material Management edited by W. Michael Bowen and Carl A. Bennett. The training manual follows the reference book in its terminology, notation and methodology. Many equations and sections in the reference book are referred to in this manual, especially in the discussion of the solutions to the problems. References are made in this training manual to appropriate sections, examples, and equations in the reference book by number as the problems are presented and as the solutions are given.- Note that the pagination of this manual is keyed to the chapter numbers with the numbers of the pages of problem solutions preceded by the letter A, and those pages devoted to references preceded by the letter R.
The training manual is intended to be used with the reference book either as a guide for self-paced instruction or as a problem manual for formal courses in statistics on this subject. It consists of a number of example problems for each chapter, following the chapters in the reference book, and worked solutions to all problems. The material is presented in loose-leaf form with each problem and solution starting on a new page so that in connection with its usage with short courses the problems may be handed the class participants first and the solutions later. Further, by presenting the material in loose-leaf form, it is possible to add problems in future years.
When used for self-paced instruction, it is helpful if the user has had some previous experience in statistical applications. However, it is hoped that the neophyte in statistics will be able to derive considerable benefit from attempting to solve the problems after having studied the reference book on a chapter-by-chapter basis. To that end, the problem solutions are presented in some detail, the intent being to convey the thought process as well as the mechanics of the solution. Nevertheless, for the beginner the training manual material will prove to be most enlightening if studied along with a qualified instructor.
