NRC ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON NUCLEAR WASTE TO MEET IN SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste (ACNW) has scheduled a public meeting June 28 - 30 in San Antonio, Texas, to discuss technical issues on high-level radioactive waste.
Discussions will focus on activities underway at the Center for Nuclear Waste Regulatory Analyses, and on high-level waste key technical issues such as igneous activity, repository design and thermal mechanical effects, and container life and source term.
The Center was established in 1987 to help NRC address technical and regulatory issues regarding a disposal site for high-level radioactive waste.
Additionally, the Committee will review a number of experiments at the Center involving hydrology and thermal-hydrology, geochemistry and radionuclide transport, structural geology modeling, and materials performance.
Other topics to be covered include the NRC's plan for reviewing the Department of Energy's draft environmental impact statement for the proposed Yucca Mountain project; and the application of the defense-in-depth concept to a high-level waste repository.
The meeting will be held at the Center for Nuclear Waste Regulatory Analyses, Southwest Research Institute, at 6220 Culebra Road, Building 189, beginning at 8:30 a.m. each day.
Individuals who wish to present oral statements at the meeting should notify Richard P. Savio, at 301-415-7363. Dr. Savio may be contacted about meeting schedule adjustments, and for further information on topics to be discussed.
ACNW meeting notices, transcripts and letter reports are available on the internet.
