NOTE TO EDITORS: PUBLIC COMMENT ON SUNSHINE ACT RULE

(NOTE DATE CORRECTION)

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has published and issued for comment its intent to implement a regulation that allows certain meetings of three or more of the five Commissioners to be held in private.

The rule -- which implements the Government in the Sunshine Act -- was first issued and made effective in 1985. The NRC is providing an opportunity at this time for public comment on its intent to implement the rule because of the time that has passed since the Commission last addressed this issue.

Comments should be submitted by June 9. Unless the Commission takes further action, the private meetings may be held beginning July 1 (erroneously reported as June 1 in the May 10 edition of the Federal Register, which has more details about this matter. A revised Federal Register notice is expected to be published shortly).

NRC issued a press release on this subject March 1.
