GPU TO UPDATE NRC ON OYSTER CREEK DECOMMISSIONING PLANNING

Representatives of GPU Nuclear Inc. will update Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff on Monday, March 29, regarding planning for the possible permanent shutdown of the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant. GPU owns and operates Oyster Creek, a boiling-water reactor located in Lacey Township, N.J.

The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. in the board room of the plant's administration building, located on Route 9. It will be open to the public.

GPU is currently trying to find a buyer for the facility. In the meantime, the company is continuing to plan for the possible decommissioning of the 29-year-old plant. Last year, after a previous attempt to sell the plant was unsuccessful, GPU said it planned to either shut down Oyster Creek in late 2000 or operate it until the expiration of its NRC license in December 2009.
