NOTE TO EDITORS: 10/23 meeting rescheduled for 10/31

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has rescheduled an upcoming meeting with Northeast Utilities to discuss the radiological controls program at the Haddam Neck nuclear power plant in Haddam, Conn. The meeting now will take place on Friday, October 31, at 10 a.m. in the NRC's public meeting room in the Region I office, 475 Allendale Road in King of Prussia, Pa. It will be open to the public for observation.

The meeting had been set for October 23, but is being rescheduled to give more public notice.

Last March, the NRC issued a letter to plant owner Northeast Utilities confirming it had agreed to take several steps aimed at improving the Haddam Neck radiological controls program. The commitments were prompted by several problems indicating continuing weakness in the management and control of radiological work at the facility.

At the October 31 meeting, NU will describe improvements, both achieved and planned. Such a meeting is required prior to the utility eliminating any of the interim compensatory measures, including radiological work restraints, that were previously put in place as the result of NRC-identified weaknesses.
