NRC TO ACCEPT PUBLIC COMMENTS AT OCTOBER 27 MEETING
REGARDING DECOMMISSIONING OF HADDAM NECK NUCLEAR POWER PLANT
Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials will solicit comments from the public regarding decommissioning plans for the Haddam Neck nuclear power plant on Monday, October 27, at Haddam Killingsworth High School. The meeting will be held from 6:30 to 10 p.m. in the auditorium at the school, located in Higganum, Conn.
Last December, owner Northeast Utilities announced that it was permanently closing the Haddam, Conn., plant. In August, in accordance with NRC regulations, the utility submitted a Post-Shutdown Decommissioning Activities Report to the agency, outlining its plans for terminating the facility and cleaning up the site.
NU has chosen the DECON option, which is expected to result in the decontamination and/or dismantlement of the majority of plant structures and facilities by 2004.
At the meeting, the NRC will do the following: describe the utility's planned activities; describe the regulatory process for decommissioning; receive public comments regarding health and safety issues and the protection of the environment during decommissioning; and provide an opportunity for state and local representatives to participate. In addition, the utility will discuss its plans for decommissioning the plant.
The meeting will be transcribed by a court reporter.
