Headquarters Daily Report NOVEMBER 26, 2002 ****************************************************** REPORT NEGATIVE ATTACHED INPUT RECEIVED HEADQUARTERS X REGION I X REGION II X REGION III X REGION IV X PRIORITY ATTENTION REQUIRED MORNING REPORT - REGION II NOV. 26, 2002 Licensee/Facility: Notification: Southern Nuclear Operating Company MR Number: 2-02-0012 Vogtle 1 2 Date: 11/26/02 Waynesboro,Georgia Dockets: 50-424,50-425 PWR/W-4-LP,PWR/W-4-LP Subject: PLANT SHUTDOWN DUE TO FEEDWATER CHEMISTRY Discussion: On November 24, 2002, both units were placed in Hot Standby due to high sodium and phosphates in the steam generators. The licensee determined that the elevated sodium and phosphates were caused by the wrong corrosion inhibitor being added to each unit's feedwater system. The corrosion inhibitor, intended for use in the plant service water system, broke down under normal operating temperatures releasing sodium and phosphates. The licensee has flushed the steam generators through a demineralizer to clean up the steam generators and the feedwater system on both units. Currently, both units are in Mode 5 with a cooldown to 120 degrees F in progress. Based on vendor and industry recommendations, the licensee will perform three drains and refills on both unit's steam generators. Contact: Curtis Rapp (404)562-4674
