Subject: FORCED SHUTDOWN TO REPAIR A REACTOR RECIRCLATION PUMP LOW OIL
LEVEL
Discussion:
On August 21, 2000, the licensee commenced a normal shutdown at 5:09
p.m., in response to a low oil level alarm indication on the "B" reactor
recirculation cooling pump lower motor bearing. The reactor was manually
scrammed at 1:08 a.m., on August 22, 2000, from about 30 percent power,
in accordance with the licensee's operating procedures. The drywell was
entered and the licensee determined that the recirculation pump low oil
level condition was valid. The licensee continues to troubleshoot to
identify and repair the oil leak on the recirculation pump motor. The
licensee also experienced a water hammer in the "A" train of the
feedwater system during the shutdown and is investigating its cause,
which is believed to be a malfunction of the "A" feedwater pump minimum
flow valve. Initial licensee inspection of the feedwater system revealed
no visible damage. Further inspections of the system are continuing to
identify and correct the cause of the water hammer event.
