MR Number: 1-00-0009 Maine Yankee 1 Date: / / Wiscasset,Maine Dockets: 50-309 PWR/CE Subject: MAINE YANKEE SHIPS FIRST TWO STEAM GENERATORS VIA BARGE Discussion: At 8:00 a.m. on June 12, 2000, Maine Yankee launched the barge containing two of its three steam generators from the site. The steam generators, which had been welded to transport saddles and shielded with an inch of steel, had been loaded onto the barge on May 31 and June 1. Preparations to secure the steam generators to the barge continued through June 11, 2000. The barge was moved out into the shipping channel at high tide and transferred to the control of tug pilots experienced with maneuvering in the Maine waterways. No problems were encountered with the launch and transfer. US Coast Guard representatives were present for the launch and some of the pre-launch preparations. Once the barge reaches the ocean, it will be transferred to the control of an ocean-going tug for the approximate 15-day trip to a metal processing facility along the Mississippi River in Memphis, TN. US Coast Guard (USCG) stations along the route have been notified of the shipment. The barge is required to check in twice daily with the USCG during the trip. A senior licensee health physics technician is accompanying the shipment. An NRC Region I Radiation Specialist was onsite for the loading of the barge and the departure of the barge from the site. A second barge that will receive the third steam generator and the pressurizer is scheduled to be loaded later this week and launched the week of June 26, 2000.
