Subject: SOLID RADIOACTIVE WASTE SHIPMENT UNDERCLASSIFICATION
Discussion:
On April 26, the licensee informed Region IV of the results of a Quality
Assurance audit which identified a shipment of solid radioactive waste
(contaminated filters) that had been underclassified. The radioactive
waste was shipped to a radioactive waste burial facility in South
Carolina in December 1999. It was received, accepted and buried at the
facility as Class C radioactive waste. The audit results determined that
the shipment should have been classified as greater than Class C waste
because the calculated aggregate activity value exceeded the Class C
waste limit by 8 percent.
The licensee notified the waste facility of the error in classification.
The waste facility, in turn, notified the State of South Carolina.
Regional Action:
NRC personnel are evaluating the reactor licensee's and the waste
facility's corrective actions as they develop.
