Subject: PALISADES STARTUP FOLLOWING PLANNED MAINTENANCE OUTAGE

Discussion:

The Palisades Nuclear Plant was taken critical at 11:05 a.m. on February
28, 2000, and was synchronized to the grid at approximately 1:50 a.m. on
February 29, 2000, following a planned maintenance outage. The outage
lasted approximately 24 days. Major activities that were completed
included: 1) replacing the seal package on Primary Coolant Pump P-50B; 2)
replacing the seals on eight control rod drive mechanisms; 3) replacing
the outboard motor bearing on Auxiliary Feedwater Pump P-8A; 4) repairing
known degraded sections of the alternate steam supply line to the turbine
driven auxiliary feedwater pump and subsequently isolating that line; and
5) cleanup of excessive sodium in the secondary chemistry.

Regional Action:

Resident inspectors observed portions of the reactor and plant startup
activities and will monitor power escalation to full power.
