Subject: UNPLANNED PLANT SHUTDOWN TO REPAIR MAIN CONDENSER TUBE LEAK

Discussion:

On January 6, 2000, at 1:15 a.m. (MST), Palo Verde Nuclear Generating
Station Unit 2 completed an unplanned reactor shutdown to repair one
ruptured main condenser tube. The ruptured tube caused the concentration
of sodium in the steam generators to exceed action levels that required a
plant shutdown. The shutdown was conducted without incident and all
equipment functioned as designed. Unit 2 is currently in Mode 3 and
repairs are underway.

Unit 2 was scheduled to be shut down on January 7 to repair a previously
identified but separate problem in the main condenser.

Regional Action:

Resident inspectors will monitor activities during the unplanned outage.
