Subject: THIS MORNING REPORT UPDATES THE INFORMATION CONTAINED IN A JULY
13, 1999 MORNING REPORT ON THE SAME SUBJECT
Discussion:
On July 15, 1999, representatives of the Ohio State University notified
Region III that a subsequent investigation of the lead containers (pigs),
first identified on July 9, 1999 and attributed to the University,
determined that the pigs had not been released from the licensee as
reported. The licensee's investigation determined that the radionuclides
identified on the labels on the lead containers in the 55 gallon drum had
not been used by the University in the last 10 years. A trace on the lot
numbers of the vials (decayed) of iodine-131 sold to the member of public
by a metals recycler could not determine to whom the vials had originally
been transferred. The Region contacted representatives of the Ohio
Department of Health who corroborated the information provided by the
licensee.
The information in this updated morning report has been reviewed with the
licensee and the Ohio Department of Health.
Regional Action:
Region III plans no further action regarding this matter.
