Purpose
NRC is sponsoring public workshops on the SCALE/MELCOR non-LWR Source Term & Fuel Cycle Demonstration Projects. The workshops are part of the agency’s efforts to prepare for safety reviews of non-LWR license applications. On March 26, 2025, from 1 – 4 P.M., the NRC will host a workshop for a heat pipe microreactor. The workshop will cover the use of NRC’s neutronics (SCALE) and accident progression (MELCOR) computer codes for modeling key phenomena under normal and accident conditions.
The workshop will highlight the following topics:
• Overview of the reactor design
• Overview of the fuel cycle that covers enrichment and transportation of UF6, fresh fuel manufacturing, spent fuel transportation and storage
• SCALE methods & results for core fission product inventory, reactivity feedback effects, criticality, shielding, and decay heat
• MELCOR methods & results for accident progression, radionuclide release, and transport
