Purpose
This meeting is the second public engagement on the NRC staff’s efforts to address Recommendation 5 (i.e., assess options for addressing low safety significant issues within the licensing basis) that was endorsed in the Low Safety Significant Issue Resolution (LSSIR) recommendation memorandum (ADAMS Accession No. ML19260G224). The Risk Informed Process for Exemptions (RIPE) is an initiative by the NRC’s EMBARK Venture Studio, in conjunction with experts within NRR, to develop a process to use risk-informed exemptions to address very low safety significant issues within the licensing basis. During this meeting, the staff will share the draft temporary staff guidance (TSG) and an example of assessing an issue with the guidance and illustrating the streamlined process in addition to an opportunity to expand the process beyond exemptions. The industry will share examples of what issues may be suitable to submit for this streamlined process and also additional guidance on using the TSTF-425 review.
