General Electric Co. - General Electric Test Reactor (GETR)

1.0 Site Identification

2.0 Site Status Summary

NRC issued a possession-only license for GETR on February 5, 1986. The license was renewed on September 30, 1992. The facility has been maintained in storage condition. The site also has shutdown power reactors, a second shutdown research reactor, and hot cells that were used for power reactor fuel post irradiation examination.

On March 14, 2025, GE Hitachi transferred the license to NorthStar Vallecitos, LLC (NSV). NSV intends to submit a decommissioning plan for GETR as soon as possible and terminate the license in 2030.

3.0 Major Technical or Regulatory Issues

On March 11, 2025, the NRC accepted for detailed review a request for a license amendment to evaluate historic and cultural resources at the Vallecitos Nuclear Center.  A draft version of the staff’s historic and cultural resources report is now available for public review and comment. Comments will be received until February 8, 2026.
