Question 144: When will licensees be permitted to use weighting factors other than one to determine and record external whole body dose (effective dose equivalent from external sources) as the occupational dose of record?

Answer: After the NRC has received and approved an application for the use of weighting factors (Wt) other than one for obtaining the effective dose equivalent. See the discussion of the comment on the use of effective dose equivalent for external exposure in the Statement of Considerations (56 FR 23368, third column and 23369, first column). The response to the comment concludes with the statement that "The use of other weighting factors for external exposure may be approved on a case-by-case basis upon request to the NRC."
