Generic Issues Related to Fire Protection

Through its assessment of plant operation, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has identified certain issues, involving public health and safety, the common defense and security, or the environment, which could affect multiple entities under NRC jurisdiction. We document and track the resolution of these generic issues (GIs) through our Generic Issues Program (GIP), as required by Congress under Section 210 of the Energy Reorganization Act of 1974 (Public Law 95-209). Under the GIP, NRC staff may take actions in five distinct stages, including Identification, Acceptance Review, Screening, Safety / Risk Assessment, and Regulatory Assessment. In addition, the NRC staff tracks and reports the generic issue status and resolution to Congress and the public. In each case, the resolution of these issues may involve new or revised rules, new or revised guidance, or revised interpretation of rules or guidance that affect nuclear power plant licensees, nuclear material certificate holders, or holders of other regulatory approvals.

The following table lists (in chronological order) the generic issues that the NRC has addressed in areas related to fire protection for licensed facilities and materials. A collection of Recent Generic Issues is available through the NRC Library. For related information, see Generic Issues Program.
