NRC, UTILITY TO DISCUSS PERFORMANCE OF INDIAN POINT 2 PLANT

Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff and representatives of Consolidated Edison Company of New York will discuss the performance of the Indian Point 2 nuclear power plant on Tuesday, December 15. Consolidated Edison operates the plant, located in Buchanan, N.Y.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in the Indian Point Energy Education Center, at Broadway and Bleakley avenues in Buchanan. It will be open to the public.

Specifically, the meeting will focus on progress made by Consolidated Edison on improving the plant's performance, as well as future performance improvement plans.

The pressurized-water reactor was shut down from October 14, 1997, until early September. It was taken out of service by the utility after experiencing recurring problems with safety-related electrical breakers, but numerous other maintenance tasks, modifications and procedure and process improvements were also made during the outage. NRC staff and utility representatives met several times during the extended shutdown to discuss efforts to improve performance at Indian Point 2 prior to restart.
