NRC TO MEET WITH PUBLIC ON PEACH BOTTOM 1 DECOMMISSIONING

The public is invited to a meeting on Monday evening, June 29, to discuss PECO Energy Company's plans to decommission the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station, Unit 1, in Delta, Pa.

Peach Bottom 1 was shut down in 1974. It is currently in "safstor" -- a method of decommissioning in which the nuclear facility is placed and maintained in such a condition that it can be safely stored and subsequently decontaminated to levels that permit release for unrestricted use.

The meeting at the Delta Area Community Senior Center will begin at 7 p.m. The Center is located in the Delta Community Building, 5 Pendyrus Street, Suite 1, in Delta.

The agenda includes a presentation by the NRC staff on the decommissioning process and NRC oversight of that process, and a presentation by PECO on the status of the facility and its plans for decommissioning. There also will be an opportunity for members of the public to ask questions and make comments related to Peach Bottom Unit 1 decommssioning.

A copy of PECO's updated final safety analysis report is available for public inspection at the NRC's local public document room at the Government Publications Section, State Library of Pennsylvania (Regional Depository), in the Education Building (Walnut and Commonwealth Avenue) in Harrisburg.
