NRC TO HOLD PRESS BRIEFING ON DECOMMISSIONING OF MAINE YANKEE

Officials from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a press briefing on Tuesday, September 30, regarding the decommissioning of the Maine Yankee nuclear power plant. The briefing will begin at 2 p.m. in the corporate office building in Brunswick, Maine.

Among the topics will be NRC regulations for decommissioning a nuclear power plant, agency oversight provided during such work and issues specific to the shutdown and dismantlement of Maine Yankee.

The press briefing will be a prelude to an October 7 public meeting regarding the Maine Yankee decommissioning process. That session will begin at 7 p.m. at the Wiscasset Middle School.

In early August, the plant's owners voted to permanently close the 810-megawatt reactor. Later that month, the plant submitted to the NRC, as required, a Post-Shutdown Decommissioning Activities Report. It calls for major decommissioning activities at the plant to be completed approximately three and a half years after the cessation of operations.
