Discussion:

This information is current as of 9:00 am (EST) on March 18, 2004. The plant is currently in Mode 3 at 415OF and 1230 psig. The plant entered Mode 3 at 5:52 pm March 17 and expects to enter Mode 4 by 6:00 am March 19. The shutdown and cooldown is being performed to establish plant conditions necessary to repair/replace the main feedwater line block isolation valve (FW-780) for steam generator 1-1, as well as resolving additional equipment issues described below:

. Repair a steam leak, discovered at a small access cover located on the Moisture Separator Reheater #2 drain
. tank, by seal welding the cover.

. Rebuild two of the steam line turbine bypass valves, due to operational issues observed during power
. operations.

. Complete fill, soak, and drain of both steam generators to adjust secondary pH-control chemistry.

. Perform radiography on the feedwater block isolation valve (FW-779) for steam generator 1-2, to verify that the
. same type of stem/disc integrity issue identified on FW-780 will not occur.

Ongoing resident inspector coverage, and around-the-clock inspection and oversight of licensee activities continues with NRC resident inspector and examiner support from all Regional Offices. Operations performance continues to be good. Evolutions have been positively controlled and appropriate actions were taken in response to emergent plant conditions.

Enhanced inspection oversight will continue to be utilized to evaluate operational evolutions. Around-the-clock oversight will be utilized during all operational evolutions until routine operations is achieved. Given the duration of the shutdown to address equipment problems, inspection oversight may be reduced to two-shift coverage during maintenance activities.
