Discussion:
On April 17, 2003, during surveillance testing, Virgil C. Summer (VCSNS) experienced a failure of a Safety-Related K-Line circuit breaker. Preliminary trouble-shooting by the licensee has determined that the apparent cause of the "B" Reactor Makeup Water Pump switchgear failure to close on demand is the high number of cycles experienced by this breaker. To confirm the preliminary findings, VCSNS retumed the breaker to the manufacturer Asea Brown Boveri (ABB) where a detailed failure report and complete overhaul are being performed.
A final report from the licensee on this 10 CFR Part 21 evaluation is expected to be submitted within 30 days of receipt of the detailed failure report from the vendor. Information regarding this Part 21 can be found in ADAMS ML031690399 or on the web at:
