Discussion:

During routine maintenance work to repair a pipe connected to a tank containing hydrofluoric acid, perturbation of the acid resulted in an individual being splashed with the acid. The individual suffered acid burns and was taken offsite by ambulance. The individual is undergoing medical treatment for the acid burns.

Regional Action:

The Paducah Senior Resident Inspector is monitoring the licensee's response to the event, including the licensee's determination of root cause and corrective actions.

The State of Illinois Environmental Protection Agency staff were onsite for a routine audit at the time of the event and were made aware of the incident. The licensee informed the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) staff of the event, and the OSHA staff are monitoring the licensee's response.
