Subject: Unit 2 Refueling Outage

Discussion:

Prairie Island Unit 2 began a refueling outage on April 28, 2000. Major
activities for the outage include steam generator eddy current
inspections, steam generator row 1 and 2 tube u-bend heat treatment, a
full-core fuel offload to support fuel assembly top nozzle inspections,
and a D5 emergency diesel generator overhaul.

During the power descension prior to the start of the outage, the reactor
tripped at 21.6% power. The cause of the trip was a trip of the main
turbine, apparently caused by a high water level signal from one of the
feedwater heaters. A similar trip also occurred during the most recent
shutdown of Unit 2 for a refueling outage in November 1998.

Regional Action:

The resident inspectors observed portions of the reactor coolant system
cooldown and will review selected operations and maintenance activities
during the outage. The final licensee evaluation of the reactor trip will
also be reviewed.
