Fusion Machine Rulemaking Status

On February 26, 2026, the NRC published a proposed rule on regulatory requirements and consolidated licensing guidance for fusion machines. These requirements will establish a technology-neutral regulatory framework that will enable the safe use and deployment of fusion technology. Comments will be accepted for 90 days and may be submitted via the “Submit a Public Comment” button on the Federal Register website (91 FR 9476) by May 27, 2026. NRC staff will host at least one public meeting during the comment period to present the proposed rule. Details about the public meeting will be posted on the NRC’s Fusion Public Meeting website no later than 10 days prior to the scheduled meeting.
