Artificial Intelligence

Summary

NRC's approach to AI.

AI at the NRC

Per the September 29, 2026, Executive Order on Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence, the NRC is working to update its communications, such as this website, to incorporate the term “Super Intelligence (SI)" and "SI" in place of "Artificial Intelligence (AI)" and "AI" in current and future agency communications. During the transition period, some NRC web pages and resources may continue to reference AI terminology. Unless otherwise indicated, references to AI should be understood as referring to the same technologies and systems now described by EO 14434 as SI.

NRC AI Mission Statement

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence to advance its mission of protecting public health, safety, and the environment in the civilian use of nuclear materials. From enhancing regulatory analysis to strengthening the review of complex license applications, AI enables the NRC to work smarter, respond faster, and regulate with greater precision. By integrating AI into both our internal operations and our approach to overseeing an increasingly technology-driven nuclear industry, we are better equipped to identify safety trends, anticipate emerging risks, and maintain the rigorous standards the American public expects. As AI continues to reshape the nuclear landscape, from advanced reactor designs to AI-enabled plant monitoring systems, the NRC remains committed to responsible innovation that keeps safety first and public trust paramount.

What We Have Accomplished

  • Created an integrated AI and Data Steering Committee to promote cross-office coordination and direction to prepare the agency for the future use of responsible AI in NRC-regulated activities.
  • Hosted a public workshop at NRC Headquarters on September 15, 2026, to discuss internal AI use cases that streamline agency operations and progress on regulatory and technical considerations for AI use across the nuclear sector.
  • Published the NRC’s AI Strategic Plan on September 29, 2025 (ML25269A196).
