NRC ACCEPTING COMMENT ON MAINE YANKEE POST-SHUTDOWN DECOMMISSIONING ACTIVITIES REPORT

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has made available for public comment the post-shutdown decommissioning activities report for the Maine Yankee nuclear plant in Wiscasset, Maine, filed with NRC on August 27.

Maine Yankee Atomic Power Company, which operated the plant, has selected the DECON alternative for decommissioning the site. DECON is the alternative in which the equipment, structures and portions of the facility and site containing radioactive contaminants are removed or decontaminated to a level that permits the property to be released for unrestricted use shortly after operations cease.

The licensee intends to complete the decontamination and dismantlement of the majority of plant structures within approximately seven years of cessation of operations. The licensee intends to construct an independent facility to store the spent fuel on site until the fuel can be permanently transferred offsite to a Department of Energy facility.

The report is available for public inspection at the local public document room at the Wiscasset Public Library, on High Street in Wiscasset. A copy is also available on the NRC's web site.

Comments should be submitted in writing to Singh Bajwa (ssb1@nrc.gov), Mail Stop 11-B 20, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, D.C. 20555, by October 12.
