ACCESSION #: 9705210249 microelectronics group Lucent Technologies Bell Labs Innovations 3000 Skyline Drive Mesquite, TX 75149 Telephone 214 284 2000 May 15, 1997 Document Control Desk U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 Re: Evaluation Reports - Lucent Technologies Inc. List 1S Round Cell Explosions Enclosed are Evaluation Reports on incidents of explosions of the Lucent Technologies' List 1S Round Cell at two (2) non-nuclear customer sites. These reports represent a follow-up to the Interim Reports submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on March 13, 1997, consistent with the requirements outlined in Part 21 of Title 10 of Chapter 1 of the Code of Federal Regulations. These preliminary investigations of the explosions indicated that improper procedures were followed. Furthermore, the extensive evaluation concludes that there is not a defect in the List 1S Round Cell Battery, nor is there a failure to comply on the part of Lucent that could create a substantial safety hazard. Lucent is hereby communicating to its nuclear customers that they are to follow the safety guidelines as specified in the Round Cell Product Manual Issue 1, August 1990. If there are any questions or requests for clarification, please contact me at (972) 284-3523. Sincerely, Augustus J.
