Discussion:
On the morning of July 1, 2004, a small amount of gaseous radioactive effluent was inadvertently released into the Auxiliary Building during the routine replacement of a letdown filter on the Makeup and Purification System. The station vent airborne radiation monitors detected the increased level. Very small quantities of radio-iodines and nobles gases were released into the Auxiliary Building and to the environment over an approximate 5-minute period. The Auxiliary Building was evacuated for a short time until the radiological conditions were assessed. The dose from the unplanned release was a small fraction of the regulatory dose limits of Appendix I to 10CFR50. No detectable offsite consequences would be expected from this release. Whole body count analyses performed by the licensee on the workers involved in the filter replacement showed no intake of radioactive material.
No press release is planned by either the licensee or the NRC.
Regional Action: Monitor the licensee's evaluation of the incident and the corrective actions during routine inspection activities.
