Subject: Perry Operators Identify and Remove Three Defective Fuel
         Assemblies


Discussion:

On June 4, 2000, the Perry plant was shut down to replace defective fuel
assemblies. During the outage, plant operators examined fuel assemblies
at four locations where the licensee suspected there was a leaking
assembly. One assembly at each of three locations was found to be
defective and was removed from the reactor core. The assemblies at the
fourth location were thoroughly inspected and no defects were found. The
licensee is conducting an evaluation in an attempt to determine the cause
of the defects.
