Subject: CORRECTION TO INFO PROVIDED RE: MINOR FUEL DEFECT AT PERRY
Discussion:
On January 18, 2000, a morning report was issued concerning Perry plant
operator actions which were taken to identify and suppress a minor fuel
defect. The report ended with a statement that there had been no increase
in the amount of radioactive material released from the site as a result
of the minor fuel defect. This statement was based on the licensee's
assertion that there had been no increase in the radiation level detected
by the plant's effluent monitors. The statement did not take into
consideration that long- lived radioactive noble gases could have been
present in the plant's gaseous effluents at levels below the required
sensitivity of the effluent monitors. Therefore, the statement should
have read that there has been no measurable increase in the amount of
radioactive material released from the site as a result of the minor fuel
defect.
