Project Overview

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is currently engaged in pre-application activities with Newcleo Americas as of March 2026. Newcleo Americas is developing its LFR-AS-200, a 480 MWth pool-type liquid metal fast reactor with a designed electrical output of 200 MWe. The LFR-AS-200 uses lead as its primary coolant and working fluid at atmospheric pressure. The use of lead is intended to provide benefits to safe operation of a high boiling point, low-pressure operation, inherent negative reactivity feedback, radiation shielding, and radionuclide retention. The LFR-AS-200 is designed to use Mixed-Oxide Fuel (MOX). Newcleo Americas is engaged with the NRC for the development of a MOX fuel fabrication facility, for information related to this facility please see NRC Docket 07007051

For more information related to the LFR-AS-200, please see the Newcleo Americas LFR-AS-200 pre-application documents (NRC Docket 99902162).
