William Dean

Bill Dean is the Regional Administrator of NRC’s Region I Office, located in King of Prussia, PA. He directs a staff of approximately 250 personnel and executes a budget of $6.5M in the implementation of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC’s) applicable licensing, inspection, oversight and enforcement programs in the Region. Under the Region’s purview are 26 operating and 7 decommissioning nuclear power plants in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States, approximately 950 materials licensees in 20 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, and 17 Agreement State Programs. 

Bill assumed the duties of Regional Administrator on October 4, 2010. In August of 2006, he was appointed to the position of Deputy Director of the Office of Nuclear Security and Incident Response (NSIR). In this role, he was responsible for program development and oversight, as well as policy development for the agency’s security, emergency preparedness, and incident response programs. This role included substantial coordination and collaboration with many external agencies, such as the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigations, and the nation’s intelligence community. 

Bill began his NRC career in Region II as an operator licensing examiner in January 1985, after serving in the US Navy as an officer in the Navy’s Nuclear Power Program for over 8 years. He has held a number of managerial positions of increasing responsibility within the NRC, including serving as the Assistant for Operations in the Office of the Executive Director for Operations, Deputy Director of the Division of Inspection Program Management in the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR), Deputy Director for the Division of Engineering in NRR, Branch Chief of the Inspection Program Branch, and Assistant to the Director of the Millstone Special Project Office. 

Bill is a 1976 graduate of the University of California at San Diego where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Applied Physics and Information Sciences. He also obtained a Masters of Business Administration from National University. He and his wife Patti have three daughters: Jennifer, who is a graduate of Providence College and holds a Masters Degree in Education from George Washington University; Sara, who is a graduate of Syracuse University; and Megan, who graduated from Gettysburg College.
