Desire Rivera Borges

Desire Rivera Borges is a senior undergraduate student at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez (UPRM), who majors in Chemical Engineering. She has over 3 years of industry and research experience in multiple fields. Additionally, she hopes to pursue a PhD after graduating. In 2019, Desire helped co-found the American Nuclear Society (ANS) UPRM Student Section, which has been recognized as an impactful section at a national level. In 2022, she recieved an ANS Commendation for Student Service and Leadership, an award which recognizes influential student leaders that demonstrate high achievements in outreach efforts. Most notably, some of the outreach efforts led by Desire included a proposal to bring nuclear engineering coursework back to the UPRM, which was presented to the university's leadership and to the NRC's Chair. As of August of 2023, two nuclear engineering courses provided by the NRC are being offered at the UPRM.
