The purpose of this public meeting is for NIST to discuss with the NRC staff what steps or actions are necessary to allow the one-time receipt of additional unirradiated uranium-235 (U-235) in the form of fuel. Following the event on February 3, 2021, NIST decided not to reuse some of the fuel in the core during the event. Since some of the fuel will not be reused, NIST needs more unirradiated fuel than is typically obtained for a regular refueling. The possession limit of U-235 is specified in NIST license condition 2.B.2.a. The inventory of replacement fuel is limited by an Order dated September 27, 1983 (8510250009). Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 73 provides the requirements for physical protection of plants and materials, which includes requirements for physical protection at nonpower reactors.
