2.0 Site Status Summary
Dresden Nuclear Power Station, Unit 1, produced power commercially from July of 1960 to its final shutdown on October 31, 1978. The facility is currently in a SAFSTOR condition. All spent fuel from Dresden Unit 1 has been transferred to the on-site Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI). A chemical decontamination of the primary system was completed in 1984. The Decommissioning Program Plan (DPP) was approved in September 1993. In May of 1998, the DPP was revised to the current Defueled Safety Analysis Report (DSAR) format. Commonwealth Edison Company submitted the Dresden Post-Shutdown Decommissioning Activities Report (PSDAR). The licensee will monitor the Dresden ISFSI complex with site security and periodic inspections until final transfer of the spent fuel to the Department of Energy for disposal.
The facility retains its Part 50 license [Possession Only] but is no longer authorized to operate or place fuel in the reactor vessel. Final decommissioning is not expected until after the permanent shutdown of Units 2 and 3.
