Project Overview
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is currently engaged in pre-application activities with Advanced Float Co., Ltd. (AFC) as of September 2026. AFC is a Japanese based company headquartered in Tokyo, Japan with plans to develop an offshore floating nuclear power plant in U.S. coastal waters at a site currently under evaluation. The proposed facility would combine the certified U.S. ABWR design (~1350 MWe) with a rigid steel floating platform to develop its first-of-a-kind, non-self-propelled offshore floating nuclear power plant. AFC plans to obtain a standard design approval followed by a combined license pursuant to 10 CFR Part 52, while preserving the certified ABWR design wherever practicable.
