OFFSITE NOTIFICATIONS - EXCEEDED DISCHARGE PERMIT
"On December 27, 2010, at 1537, a report was made to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment for exceeding the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit limits to outfall 011A. The limits were exceeded due to the General Service Water (GSW) traveling screens being in continuous operation and the back wash being aligned to outfall 011A which resulted in exceeding the maximum discharge limit of 1.8 million gallons per calendar day as a result of a fish intrusion event occurring at the GSW intake. The GSW traveling screens have been in continuous operation since 2100 on December 25 and the daily discharge limit was reached at 1700 on December 26. The condition was necessary to maintain safe and reliable operations of the plant in response to the fish intrusion. The GSW traveling screens are being continuously monitored in order to limit unnecessary discharge into outfall 011A and restore full compliance with the NPDES permit as conditions improve. This report is being made in accordance with 10CFR50.72(b)(2)(xi) 'Any event or situation. Related to the health and safety of the public or onsite personnel, or protection of the environment, for which a news release is planned or notification to other government agencies has been or will be made.' "
The NRC Resident Inspector has been notified.
