Palisades Requests License Amendment Review

On Sept. 30, 2026, Palisades Energy (Holtec) requested permission to use custom equipment and procedures to move a tilted nuclear fuel assembly from the reactor core to the spent fuel pool. The NRC is reviewing the request and has provided an opportunity for public comment. The NRC has verified that the fuel rods in the tilted assembly remain intact and safe while the review continues.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission was created as an expert, technical agency to protect public health, safety, and security, and regulate the civilian use of nuclear materials, including enabling the deployment of nuclear power for the benefit of society. Among other responsibilities, the agency issues licenses, conducts inspections, initiates and enforces regulations, and plans for incident response.
