United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission - Protecting People and the Environment

TH27 The NRC's Safety Culture Policy Statement and Agency Initiatives Experience)

The NRC published its Safety Culture Policy Statement (SCPS) on June 14, 2011. This policy statement provides the Commission's expectations that the regulated community will establish and maintain a positive safety culture. The Commission tasked the NRC staff with providing outreach and education to advance this initiative. This session will provide the status of NRC activities and initiatives related to the SCPS, including Commission direction, outreach activities, and the development and distribution of educational tools. It will include a general update on safety culture activities undertaken by several major program offices to address the Commission's direction on outreach and education about the SCPS. In addition, the staff will provide a brief overview of international safety culture activities in which the NRC has participated. A representative from the Nuclear Energy Institute will discuss the various activities underway to develop strong safety culture practices and assessments and to adopt a common safety culture language. Finally, the NRC staff will provide an update on recent activities focused on the continuous improvement of the agency's own (i.e., internal) safety culture, within the broader context of an overall organizational culture focus and with appropriate consideration of the SCPS content.
