2014 NRC–RES/EPRI Fire PRA Course

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research (RES), in cooperation with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), will jointly sponsor a course on fire probabilistic risk assessment (PRA). Since 2002, RES and EPRI, under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Cooperative Nuclear Safety Research, have been developing state-of-the-art methods for conducting fire PRA. In September 2005, this work produced the state-of-the-art “EPRI/NRC-RES Fire PRA Methodology for Nuclear Power Facilities” (NUREG/CR‑6850/EPRI 1011989), which is the subject of this 2014 course.

The 2014 Fire PRA course will be offered in five technical area modules to maximize transfer of the relevant technology to the users. The 2014 training will also include discussion of the latest fire PRA enhancements documented in the following reports prepared jointly by EPRI and RES:

The 2014 training includes discussion relating to the fire PRA portion of the ASME/ANS PRA Standard3 to the methodology of NUREG/CR-6850 (EPRI 1011989).

Two identical sessions will be offered.

There will be no fee for this workshop. However, registration is required by July 18, 2014 for session I and August 29, 2014 for session II. (Participation may be limited if space availability is exceeded.) Complete the electronic registration forms below to register for this year's course. You will be redirected to the EPRI website.

Please Note: Notebooks will NOT be provided in this year’s course. The course materials will be available on the web prior to the course for download.

It is essential that each student have either an electronic copy (on their laptop) or a paper copy with them for the training. It is each attendee's responsibility to download and bring this material to the training.  Module V requires the use of a computer. Please ensure you have administrative rights to add software to the computer.

1 EPRI has published a joint publication with RES that is publicly available and consolidates the NFPA 805 FAQs related to fire PRA. This publication is designated as EPRI 1019259 / NUREG/CR-6850 Supplement 1. It may be downloaded for free from EPRI’s website.

2 EPRI 1019196, NUREG-1921, "EPRI/NRC-RES Fire Human Reliability Analysis Guidelines" and EPRI 1019195, NUREG 1934, "Nuclear Power Plant Fire Modeling Application Guide" are currently under final review. Links to download these materials will be provided when finalized reports are released.

3 The ASME/ANS PRA Standard will not be provided for this course. Students are encouraged to bring their own copy to follow along with during the training.
