Information Notice No. 87-27: IRANIAN OFFICIAL IMPLIES VAGUE THREAT TO
U.S. RESOURCES
Addressees:
All nuclear power reactor facilities holding an operating license (OL) or a
construction permit (CP), research and nonpower reactor facilities, and fuel
fabrication and processing facilities using or possessing formula quantities
of special nuclear material.
Purpose:
This information notice is provided to notify licensees of information
received which could be a vague threat to U.S. nuclear facilities.
Description of Circumstances:
A recent radio broadcast from Tehran reported that an Iranian official
indicated, in a public speech, that U.S. centers, nuclear reactors and other
U.S. interests worldwide can be more vulnerable to attack than Iranian missile
bases in Iran.
Discussion:
The NRC is monitoring the situation and is in contact with other government
agencies as to the significance of this information. Based on the information
currently available, NRC concludes that licensee action in response to this
information is not warranted at this time. If additional information is
received which changes this position, notification will be made. If you have
