Discussion:

On March 14, 2005, a fire was detected in the Multi-Purpose Facility (MPF) at the Cooper Nuclear Station. This MPF is part of the radiologically controlled area and is used as a storage and machine shop. A large plastic container holding trash was found on fire. The licensee used a fire hose to extinguish the fire. The fire was extinguished at 2:58 a.m. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The plastic container was located adjacent to a Sea-Land container that contained additional outage-related items. The licensee noticed smoke coming from the container and also noted that the container was hot. The container was locked, requiring additional time to unlock the container. The container was unlocked and opened at 3:08 a.m. Some material inside the Sea-Land container, that was located closest to the fire outside the container, was burning. Licensee personnel used a fire hose to extinguish this fire and declared the fire extinguished at 3:13 a.m. The fire did not affect equipment important to safety nor deemed to have an appreciable potential to affect safety-related equipment. Additionally, no radioactive material was impacted by the event.

Local fire department assistance was not requested by the licensee. The licensee did not declare a Notification of Unusual Event (NOUE) based on understanding that the two fires were separate events.

This morning report is being submitted for information only. The resident inspectors responded to the fire and continue to monitor the licensee's actions and investigation of the event.
