The minimum storage capacity in the spent fuel storage pool should equal or exceed the amount of spent fuel from five years of operation at full power plus one full core discharge from each unit sharing the pool. Due to insufficient away-from-reactor storage capacity, the industry trend has been to use high-density storage racks. The reviewer evaluates high-density storage case by case. Low-density storage should be used, at a minimum, for the most recently discharged fuel to enhance the capability to cool it.
