Louis Caponi

Louis Caponi joined the NRC in 2020 as a General Engineer.  He is a member of the first cohort of the Nuclear Regulator Apprenticeship Network.  He earned his bachelors degree in nuclear engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.  During his first two years at RPI, Louis worked as an undergraduate assistant on two research projects related to heat transfer optimization and cellular effects of radiation on biological systems.  Through the Westinghouse Fellows Program, he aided the Computational Biomechanics Lab at Penn State University in developing and refining finite element analysis simulations of a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar to model the effects of extreme environments on Dyneema®, the world’s strongest fiber.  Louis is proud to start his NRC career contributing to projects related to low-level waste classification and decommissioning reviews in the Office of Material Safety and Safeguards.
