Mirela Gavrilas

Dr. Mirela Gavrilas serves as the Director, Division of Safety Systems, Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR).

Dr. Gavrilas joined the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in 2004 as a reactor systems engineer in the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research (RES).  Since that time, she has served in positions of increasing responsibility in both RES and NRR.  In 2014, she was selected for the Senior Executive Service (SES) position of Deputy Director, Division of Policy and Rulemaking, NRR.  In 2016, she was selected as Deputy Director, Division of Risk Assessment, NRR.

Before joining the NRC, Dr. Gavrilas served on the University of Maryland faculty.  She received a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Maryland and a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  Dr. Gavrilas is a graduate of NRC’s SES Candidate Development Program.
