Brian McDermott

Brian J. McDermott has been the Acting Director of the NRC’s Office of Nuclear Security and Incident Response (NSIR) since December 2017.  NSIR is responsible for preventing nuclear security incidents and preparing for and responding to safety and security events.//Mr. McDermott joined the NRC in 1990, serving as an Engineering Inspector in Region I, and then as the Resident Inspector at Susquehanna and Senior Resident Inspector at Vermont Yankee. He has since held progressively more responsible positions throughout the agency.

From 2002 to 2007, he served in three Region I Branch Chief assignments. Since joining the Senior Executive Service in 2007, Mr. McDermott has held the senior management positions of Deputy Director for Incident Response, NSIR; Director, Division of Preparedness and Response, NSIR; Acting Director, Division of Security Policy, NSIR; Director, Division of Materials Safety and State Agreements, Office of Federal, State, Materials and Environment; Deputy Office Director, NSIR; and Deputy Director for Engineering, Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation.

Mr. McDermott received a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering from the Pennsylvania State University and a master of business administration from Franklin Pierce College. He is a graduate of NRC’s SES Candidate Development Program.
