Gustavo Caruso

Mr. Gustavo Caruso is an Electrical Engineer with a post graduate degree on Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection.

He joined the Nuclear Regulatory Authority of Argentina 30 years ago, and has worked in a variety of positions in safety assessment, regulatory inspections of nuclear installations and licensing of nuclear power plants. He was an Executive Manager of the Reactor Regulation Department at the Regulatory Body in Argentina, a member of several regulatory forums, nuclear safety committees and an expert in several topics for safety and regulation of nuclear installations.

Mr. Caruso was appointed as the Section Head of the Regulatory Activities of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2005. His duties, among other were the IAEA’s Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS), the Convention on Nuclear Safety, and Strengthening Regulatory Framework in Member States.

The Director General of the IAEA designated Mr. Caruso as the Special Coordinator of the Nuclear Safety Action Team (NSAT), in September 2011. NSAT is responsible for overseeing the prompt implementation of the IAEA Action Plan on Nuclear Safety and to ensure proper coordination among all stakeholders and for the elaboration of the IAEA Report on the Fukushima Daiichi Accident.
