John C. Butler

John Butler is the senior director of Strategic Programs at the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), the organization responsible for establishing unified policy on matters affecting the nuclear energy industry. He has 33 years’ experience in the nuclear power industry where his responsibilities have included nuclear plant safety analysis, risk assessment, licensing and operations. He has been with NEI since 1997. In 2006, he became director for safety focused regulation, with responsibility for industry activities associated with the reactor oversight process. In 2009, he was named director of operations support, assuming responsibility for operator licensing, license renewal and work hours activities. The following year, he assumed an expanded role as director of engineering and operations support, where he was responsible for coordinating the nuclear industry’s generic activities on a range of engineering topics. Beginning in 2014, Mr. Butler was promoted to senior director, strategic programs. He currently is responsible for oversight and direction of activities addressing cumulative impact.

Prior to joining NEI, he was with Westinghouse Electric Co. in various engineering and licensing positions in support of current and advanced plant licensing and analysis. Mr. Butler graduated from Mississippi State University with a bachelor of science in nuclear engineering and from University of Michigan with a master of science in nuclear engineering.
